I use a lane that goes downhill so I can stay with the buses, however if I ride in the opposite direction I jump in the car lane to let them go around before giving them a wave.

As far as I'm aware, that rider was in the lane illegally. "Transit" & "Bus Only" lanes do not allow cyclists (or cars for that matter), but cyclists are allowed to travel in "Bus" lanes.

I generally don't need to travel in Bus lanes, so haven't had any issues.
